Conventional Current

Symbol: I · Unit: A

The direction of current flow from positive to negative in a circuit, opposite to the direction of electron flow.

Conventional current flows from the positive terminal of a source through the circuit to the negative terminal. This convention was established before the discovery of the electron.

In reality, electrons (negative charges) flow from negative to positive. The two descriptions are consistent: positive charge flowing one way is equivalent to negative charge flowing the other way.

IGCSE Physics uses conventional current direction in circuit diagrams unless the question specifies electron flow.
