Radioactive Decay

The spontaneous and random emission of radiation from an unstable nucleus as it becomes more stable.

Radioactive decay is:

  • Spontaneous: it happens without any external trigger.
  • Random: it is impossible to predict which particular nucleus will decay next.

Three types of nuclear radiation:

TypeSymbolChargeMassPenetrating powerIonising power
Alphaα\alpha+24Stopped by paperStrongest
Betaβ\beta^{-}1-1~0Stopped by aluminiumModerate
Gammaγ\gamma00Reduced by lead/concreteWeakest

Decay causes the nucleus to change its proton/nucleon numbers (except gamma, which only releases energy).

A 0625 specialist can explain this concept using the student's own questions and show how it appears in exam papers.
