A voltmeter is connected in parallel across the component whose potential difference is being measured.
An ideal voltmeter has infinite resistance so it draws no current from the circuit and does not affect the reading.
Digital voltmeters give a numerical reading directly. Analogue voltmeters use a needle on a scale.
To measure the e.m.f. of a cell, connect the voltmeter directly across the cell’s terminals.
