Can My Child Catch Up in IGCSE Physics?

A realistic parent framework for judging whether an IGCSE Physics student can catch up, based on syllabus gaps, Mathematics, tier and time available.

Catch-up potential depends on the size and type of the gap, not a generic number of weeks. Audit the syllabus and skills before estimating the workload.

“Can my child catch up?” sounds like a question about time, but it is first a question about the size and type of the gap. Two students with the same mark may need very different plans.

Measure the gap before estimating the workload

Gather four pieces of evidence:

  1. A current Cambridge 0625 syllabus checklist.
  2. One or more recent marked papers or topic tests.
  3. A short Mathematics diagnostic covering algebra, units, ratios, standard form and gradients.
  4. Evidence from Paper 5 or Paper 6 skills.

Mark syllabus outcomes as secure, partly secure, missing or not yet taught. Then separate knowledge gaps from transferable skill gaps.

Distinguish a narrow gap from a structural gap

A narrow gap may involve one unfinished topic, one calculation skill or weak practical evaluation. A structural gap may include several connected topics, unreliable algebra, poor recall and little timed practice.

The narrow problem can be addressed with targeted teaching and practice. The structural problem needs a sequence that protects foundational learning while continuing broad examination preparation.

Consider the entry route

For the 2026 to 2028 syllabus, Core candidates are eligible for grades C to G and Extended candidates for A* to G. Extended includes Core plus Supplement content and uses the more demanding theory and multiple-choice papers.

A parent should not change the entry route from fear alone. Use current marked evidence, the student’s academic destination, the school’s advice and the actual entry deadline. The school or examination centre controls formal entry.

Build a catch-up order

A useful order is:

  • secure quantities, units, algebra and graph skills
  • learn missing prerequisite concepts
  • complete short topical questions
  • correct and retry errors
  • add mixed-topic work
  • prepare the practical component separately
  • move into timed papers when enough content is secure

Do not wait for every note to look perfect before attempting questions. Do not use full papers as the only learning method while large content gaps remain.

Protect the student from an impossible timetable

A plan should fit schoolwork, sleep and other subjects. Filling every evening can produce passive revision and resistance. Decide which activities produce evidence of learning and remove low-value repetition.

Parents should also ask what the target is for. A required grade for a later course, a personal goal and a general wish to “do better” lead to different priorities.

When can one-to-one tuition help?

Tuition can shorten the diagnosis and feedback cycle when the tutor works from marked evidence. A lesson can address a misconception, equation choice, written explanation or practical skill, then check independent application.

Ask the tutor to explain the proposed sequence and what the student must practise between lessons. Avoid any promise that a particular grade can be reached within a fixed period.

Signs that the plan is becoming more effective

Look for fewer repeated errors, greater syllabus coverage, more complete working, better practical routines and stable performance across comparable tasks. The total mark matters, but the changing error pattern explains whether the improvement is likely to hold.

There is no responsible universal answer. The estimate depends on untaught content, misconceptions, Mathematics, Core or Extended entry, practical skills, available study time and the examination date.
