How to Tell If IGCSE Physics Tutoring Is Working

You are paying RM80 to RM90 an hour and hoping it is working. Reassurance from your child (“the lesson was good”) is not evidence, and a school report is months away. How soon should I see results from physics tutoring?

Sooner than a full grade, but not overnight. Pure technique improves fastest: Paper 6 method, calculation layout and command-word phrasing can lift within two or three weeks because they are skills, not knowledge. A full grade on past papers is a bigger ask, realistically 8 to 12 weeks of weekly classes plus around three hours of marked practice between them.

So judge early progress on technique and habits, not on the headline grade. If the working is getting cleaner and Paper 6 scores are climbing by week three, the engine is running even before the grade catches up.

What does real progress look like in the first month?

Concrete, checkable things, none of which need you to understand the physics. Run this list at the four-week mark:

• Recall. Can your child state five core equations from memory, cold? Equation recall is the foundation of calculation marks, and it should be solid within the first few weeks.
• Method on paper. Pick a calculation they got wrong a month ago. Can they now lay it out properly: equation, substitute, answer with a unit? The working should look more disciplined, not just the final number.
• The same question type, scored higher. This is the strongest single signal. If their score on a particular question type (say, circuit calculations or a 6-mark explanation) has moved up two or three marks, the tutoring is doing its job.
• A working homework loop. The tutor sets past-paper work, it gets marked within the week, and the next lesson opens from those errors. No loop means you are paying for explanation, not progress.

If three of those four are happening, stay the course. If none are, it is time for a direct conversation.

By the eight-week mark, expect something bigger: a mock or full past paper that has climbed a grade band, or one named weakness (Paper 6, say, or extended-response answers) that has gone from a reliable loss to a reliable gain. That is the milestone that tells you the money is buying real movement, not just company once a week. Write down where your child started so you have an honest baseline to measure against, because memory flatters slow progress in both directions.

What are the warning signs tutoring is not working?

Some signals reliably predict wasted terms. Watch for these:

• All talk, no pen. If the tutor explains for 90 minutes and your child writes almost nothing, the lesson felt productive and moved little. Across a good lesson your child should be the one doing most of the writing.
• Homework set but never marked. Unmarked practice cannot tell anyone what is wrong. The marking is where the value lives.
• No adjustment to your child’s level. After two lessons a good tutor has diagnosed the real block and changed approach. A tutor still delivering generic chapter coverage in week three has not been listening.
• No record of what was covered. If neither tutor nor child can summarise what the last month covered, there is no plan behind the lessons, just a standing weekly slot.
• Your child dreads the lesson. A taught trial should have caught a bad fit, but fit can degrade. Dread kills learning, and it is worth raising fast.

My child seems happier but the grades have not moved. What now?

Do not ignore it, and do not panic either. Comfort with a tutor is genuinely valuable: an anxious student who now attempts questions has cleared the first hurdle. But comfort has to convert into marks, so make the invisible visible.

Ask the tutor three direct questions. What specific weakness are we working on right now? What does the marked past-paper evidence show over the last month? What is the plan for the next four weeks? A specialist answers with specifics: “circuit recall is solid, we are drilling equation rearrangement and explain-style answers, scores on those moved from 4 to 6 out of 10.” A vague, reassuring answer with no evidence is itself the problem. What is realistic, and what is not?

Set expectations against reality so you neither give up too early nor tolerate drift. Realistic: one full grade in 8 to 12 weeks, two grades over a term or more, a transformed Paper 6 inside a month, and steady week-on-week gains on marked papers. Not realistic: an overnight jump, a guaranteed A*, or a tutor who does the work so your child does not have to. Tutoring accelerates effort; it never replaces it.
