Choosing Core or Extended for IGCSE Physics

Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 offers two routes: Core and Extended. The choice affects which papers you sit and which grades you can achieve.

Core route

Papers: Paper 1 (Multiple Choice, Core) + Paper 2 (Theory, Core) + Paper 6 (Alternative to Practical).

Available grades: C to G.

The highest grade possible on Core is C. This route is designed for students who find the subject challenging or who need a passing grade but are not aiming for top marks.

Extended route

Papers: Paper 3 (Multiple Choice, Extended) + Paper 4 (Theory, Extended) + Paper 6 (Alternative to Practical).

Available grades: A* to G.

The Extended paper covers all Core content plus additional Extended content. Students aiming for grade B or above must take Extended.

When to choose Core

• The student finds physics very difficult and the priority is to secure a passing grade.
• The student does not plan to study physics or a related science at A Level or IB.
• The teacher recommends Core based on classroom performance.

When to choose Extended

• The student is aiming for grade B or above.
• The student plans to study physics, engineering or a related subject after IGCSE.
• The student is comfortable with algebra and can rearrange equations confidently.

Can you switch?

Check with your school. Some schools register all students for Extended. Some allow a switch until a certain deadline. If you are registered for Core and want to switch to Extended, you will need to learn the additional Extended content.

What if you take Extended and struggle?

Extended papers still award lower grades (D, E, F, G). You do not automatically fail if the questions are difficult. However, if you are consistently scoring below 30% on Extended practice papers, Core may be a more realistic route.
