Some Malaysian students switch from SPM Physics to IGCSE Physics 0625 for various reasons: international university applications, curriculum preference, or school transfer. Here is what the switch involves.
Syllabus overlap
About 60 to 70% of the content overlaps between SPM Physics and IGCSE Physics 0625. Both cover mechanics, waves, electricity, heat and nuclear physics.
Key differences:
- IGCSE includes Space Physics (solar system, life cycle of stars, redshift and the Big Bang). SPM does not.
- SPM has more emphasis on electronics (logic gates, transistors). IGCSE covers these at a basic level.
- IGCSE equations may use different symbols or conventions. For example, IGCSE uses “s” for distance in some contexts where SPM uses “d”.
- IGCSE practical assessment (Paper 6) focuses on data analysis and evaluation, while SPM practical assessment differs in format.

What to do if you switch mid-year
- Obtain the Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 syllabus.
- Compare it with the SPM syllabus you have already studied. Mark topics you have covered and topics that are new.
- Prioritise the new topics (Space Physics is the largest gap).
- Practice past IGCSE papers to familiarise yourself with the question style and mark scheme expectations.
University acceptance
Most Malaysian and international universities accept both IGCSE and SPM results. However, some international universities prefer IGCSE or A-Level qualifications. Check the specific entry requirements of your target universities.
When to switch
The earlier the better. Switching in Year 10 gives a full 2 years of preparation. Switching in Year 11 is possible but requires intensive study to cover the syllabus gaps.
