This lesson explains practical strategies for managing exam anxiety in IGCSE Physics.

Why anxiety affects performance

Anxiety narrows your attention and uses working memory that you need for problem-solving. A student who knows the content but panics in the exam will underperform.

Strategy 1: Preparation reduces anxiety

The single most effective way to reduce exam anxiety is thorough preparation. Practice under timed conditions so the exam format is familiar. When you sit down in the exam, nothing should be a surprise.

Strategy 2: Arrive with a routine

Before the exam: get a full night’s sleep, eat breakfast, arrive early. Avoid last-minute cramming, which increases stress without improving recall.

Strategy 3: The first five minutes

Read through the entire paper before writing. Identify the questions you are confident about. Start with those. Early success builds confidence and reduces anxiety.

Strategy 4: When you get stuck

If a question is difficult:

  1. Read it again slowly.
  2. Underline the key information.
  3. Write what you know about the topic (equations, definitions).
  4. Attempt the question using what you have.
  5. If you are still stuck after 2 minutes, move on and return to it later.

Do not sit staring at a blank page. Move to the next question. Marks at the end of the paper are worth the same as marks at the start.

Strategy 5: Physical techniques

If anxiety peaks during the exam:

  • Take three slow, deep breaths (in for 4 counts, out for 6 counts).
  • Relax your shoulders and hands (tension builds without you noticing).
  • Refocus on the current question only.

Strategy 6: Perspective

One question, one paper, one exam session does not define your ability. A mistake on question 3 has no effect on your ability to answer question 4. Treat each question as a fresh start.

After the exam

Do not compare answers with other students. It causes unnecessary stress and cannot change your result. Focus on preparing for the next paper.
