How to Improve from D to B in IGCSE Physics

This lesson explains what separates a D grade from a B grade in IGCSE Physics and how to close the gap.

What a D grade means

A D grade typically means you can recall basic facts and do simple calculations, but you struggle with multi-step problems, explanations and applying physics to unfamiliar situations.

What a B grade requires

A B grade requires you to:

• Rearrange and apply equations confidently
• Write clear explanations with correct physics vocabulary
• Interpret graphs and data
• Apply physics principles to new contexts
• Answer calculation questions with full working and correct units

Step 1: Close the calculation gap

Most of the difference between D and B is in calculation questions. Practice rearranging equations, converting units and showing working. Do 5 calculation questions daily for 4 weeks.

Step 2: Learn the vocabulary

Replace everyday language with physics vocabulary. Not “it pushes harder” but “the resultant force increases.” Not “it gets hotter” but “the internal energy increases.” Correct vocabulary earns marks.

Step 3: Practice explain questions

For each major topic, write out a 3-point explanation of a key concept. Check it against the mark scheme. Revise any gaps.

Step 4: Graph skills

Practice plotting graphs (choosing scales, plotting points accurately, drawing best-fit lines). Practice reading values from graphs and calculating gradients. These are reliable marks if you follow the procedure.

Step 5: Past paper analysis

Do a full past paper. Mark it. Classify every lost mark:

• Did not know the content: revise that topic
• Knew the content but made an error: practice the skill
• Did not understand the question: read the examiner report for that question

Step 6: Focus on extended content

For the B grade, you must take the Extended paper (Paper 4). Make sure you know the Extended-only content: momentum, gas laws, transformer equations, nuclear equations.

Timeline

With focused daily study (45 to 60 minutes), moving from D to B is realistic over 8 to 12 weeks for a student who attends all lessons and completes all practice.
