Every mistake in Physics is information. The students who improve fastest are not the ones who make the fewest mistakes. They are the ones who learn the most from each mistake.
The error log method
After every test, practice paper or marked homework, create an error log entry:
| Question | My answer | Correct answer | Error type | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q3b: Calculate resistance | 24 V (wrong unit) | 24 ohm | Unit error | Always write the unit formula: V/A = ohm |
| Q7a: Define momentum | ”The force of a moving object" | "The product of mass and velocity” | Definition wrong | Re-learn from syllabus, add to flashcards |
| Q12c: Explain convection | Only mentioned “hot air rises” | Need: particles gain KE, expand, become less dense, rise, cooler fluid moves in to replace | Incomplete explanation | Write full 4-step convection explanation |
The four error types
1. Knowledge errors
You did not know the fact, definition or equation. Fix: Add to flashcards, re-study the topic section.
2. Method errors
You knew the physics but set up the calculation, diagram or explanation incorrectly. Fix: Practise the method step-by-step on similar questions until it becomes automatic.
3. Careless errors
You knew the answer but made a slip: wrong unit, arithmetic mistake, misread the question. Fix: Develop a checking routine. These errors are the easiest to eliminate.
4. Exam technique errors
You answered a different question from what was asked, wrote too much for a 1-mark question, or ran out of time. Fix: Practise command word technique and time management.
How to use the error log
- After each test: Complete the log within 24 hours while the paper is fresh.
- Before the next revision session: Review the log. Your next session should target the error type you made repeatedly.
- Before the exam: Read through all error logs. Look for patterns: the same topic appearing repeatedly, the same error type recurring.
The correction cycle
For each error:
- Understand why the correct answer is correct.
- Redo the question without looking at the correct answer.
- Check. If still wrong, get help (tutor, teacher, study partner).
- Attempt a similar question to confirm you have fixed the problem.
Why many students skip this
Reviewing mistakes is uncomfortable. It forces you to confront what you do not know. But comfort and learning rarely happen at the same time. The discomfort of reviewing mistakes in revision is much less than the discomfort of making them in the real exam.
