In a longitudinal wave, particles vibrate back and forth along the same direction the wave travels. This creates alternating compressions (high pressure) and rarefactions (low pressure).
Examples: sound waves, P-waves (seismic), ultrasound, waves along a slinky spring.
Longitudinal waves cannot be polarised because the vibrations are already restricted to one axis (parallel to the direction of travel).
