In a transverse wave, particles vibrate at right angles to the direction the wave travels.
Examples: water surface waves, waves on a string or rope, all electromagnetic waves, S-waves (seismic).
Transverse waves can be polarised (restricted to vibrate in one plane only). This distinguishes them from longitudinal waves, which cannot be polarised.
The features of a transverse wave (amplitude, wavelength, frequency, period) can be read from a displacement-distance or displacement-time graph.
