Definition of renewable energy for Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625, covering types of renewable sources, their advantages and limitations.

Renewable energy comes from sources that are naturally replenished and will not run out on a human timescale. These sources contrast with fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas), which are finite and take millions of years to form.

Types of renewable energy sources

Solar energy: photovoltaic cells convert sunlight directly into electricity. Solar panels heat water. Advantages: no emissions during operation, low maintenance. Limitations: depends on sunlight (weather and time of day), large area needed, high initial cost.

Wind energy: wind turbines convert kinetic energy of moving air into electricity. Advantages: no fuel cost, no emissions. Limitations: wind is intermittent, visual impact, noise, needs many turbines for large-scale power.

Hydroelectric energy: water stored behind a dam falls through turbines. Advantages: reliable, can respond quickly to demand, no emissions during operation. Limitations: requires specific geography, large-area flooding destroys habitats, high construction cost.

Tidal energy: uses the rise and fall of tides to drive turbines in a barrage. Advantages: predictable, reliable. Limitations: few suitable locations, expensive, affects ecosystems.

Geothermal energy: uses heat from hot rocks deep underground to produce steam that drives turbines. Advantages: available 24/7, low emissions. Limitations: only viable in geologically active regions.

Wave energy: uses the motion of surface waves to generate electricity. Advantages: no emissions. Limitations: low energy density, equipment must withstand storms, still an emerging technology.

Biomass / biofuels: burning plant material or converting it to gas/liquid fuels. The carbon released was recently absorbed from the atmosphere, so the net contribution to atmospheric CO2 is lower than fossil fuels (though not zero).
