How to Revise IGCSE Physics as a Working Student

Revision strategies for IGCSE Physics students who have limited time due to work, family or other commitments, focusing on efficiency over hours.

Some IGCSE Physics students are not full-time school students. Private candidates, home-educated students and working students all face the same syllabus with less structured study time. The key is efficiency, not volume.

The 30-minute daily minimum

If you can study for just 30 focused minutes per day, 5 days a week, that gives you 2.5 hours per week. Over a 6-month preparation period, that is 65 hours of study, which is enough to cover the core syllabus if every minute is used well.

The rule is simple: 30 minutes of focused, active study beats 2 hours of distracted reading.

What to cut

You cannot revise everything with limited time. Prioritise by mark value:

  1. Motion, Forces and Energy: largest section by mark allocation. Master the core equations and concepts.
  2. Electricity and Magnetism: second largest. Focus on circuit calculations and electromagnetic effects.
  3. Thermal Physics and Waves: moderate mark allocation. Cover the key concepts.
  4. Nuclear Physics and Space Physics: smallest sections. Learn the core facts; skip the edge cases.

Daily session structure

  • 0 to 5 minutes: review yesterday’s flashcard errors.
  • 5 to 25 minutes: study one subtopic (read, then attempt 1 to 2 questions from memory).
  • 25 to 30 minutes: write 3 key points from today’s session in your revision log.

Weekend sessions

If possible, allocate one 60-minute session on Saturday for a past paper practice. Attempt half a paper (60 marks in 60 minutes for Paper 4). Mark it against the mark scheme. Record errors.

Using commute time

If you travel to work, use audio or video explanations during the commute. This is passive learning and will not replace active practice, but it keeps concepts fresh.

Exam registration

Private candidates must register through a Cambridge centre in Malaysia. Registration deadlines are typically 6 months before the exam. Check the dates early and register on time.

When to seek help

If you are stuck on a topic for more than 3 sessions, consider a short block of tutoring (4 to 6 sessions) focused specifically on that topic. This can unblock progress more efficiently than spending weeks struggling alone.

A private taught trial can help distinguish whether the repeated difficulty is mainly Physics knowledge, Mathematics, practical reasoning or exam technique before regular lessons are discussed.
